“Jesus came to fulfill the Law, He was
not against it!
Why are you Christians not doing what
Jesus did??”
This is what
muslims ask me.
This other muslims asked, If
Jesus came to keep the Law, how could He bring a new teaching that was
different? Therefore according to him, He didn't bring a new teaching
and therefore Christianity must be false...
-Yes, don't laugh, it’s actually sad that in today’s
world where information is very easily accessed, these are the type of shallow
things they keep saying to us, without ever knowing and thinking of anything
within its clear context.
Now, let's read the particular passage first:
Mat 5:17-19 / Think not that I am come to destroy the
law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. 18 For verily I
say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no
wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. 19 Whosoever therefore shall
break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be
called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach
them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Explanation:
Jesus was
the God of the Law. He had given them the Law before he was born on earth and
afterwards, as a human, being a Jew, He had to honor the Law by keeping it,
meaning fulfilling it Himself (v.17). So He is telling them that His
intention FOR THE JEWS was not to say bad things against the Law or to
destroy it by making Israelites not keep it, but to even fulfill it in His life
as well!! So by saying He came to fulfill it, HE IS ASSURING THEM of His
intentions and how He respects the law and prompts them that they too must keep
and teach the Law as it was given, in fact, He tells them that if they did not
keep the Law exactly, there would be consequences for them. (v.19.)
Is this not
all clear?
Jesus however,
as we read in the New Testament, did not just come for that! Anyone therefore
that picks one teaching of Jesus’ and disregards the rest, looks like a fool to
all of us Christians and is considered A LIAR and used by the Devil.
Having said
that, Jesus came also to set up a New Testament FOR ISRAELITES AND THE NATIONS,
but without destroying the Old one for the Jews, that is, why would He destroy
it, it was perfect in itself, it is just that it could not perfect anyone,
but just served the purpose to show them their
weak, sinful self, in need of a Saviour. On
the contrary, He had to fulfill everything the Law asked of Jews, because the
Jews could not be sinless and keep the Law themselves. In fact, if you read the
next verses after this passage, He goes beyond what they read in letters of the
Law and reveals to them the deeper essence of the Law, where if e.g. you don't
commit adultery, but even just look with lust at a woman, you are found guilty
by the same Law, as having committed adultery in your heart (v.27-28)!!! So
friends, Jesus keeping the Law, had the purpose of Him being perfect, outwardly
and inwardly, in the face of the demands of His eternal Justice, in order that
non perfect Jews can also be saved because of His holy life and death for
the remission of their sins as well. So, He had to replace all Jews, by
keeping the Law for them perfectly! Do you see now why He has such emphasis
on His words to them?
Indeed, He
came to fulfill the commandments He and His Father gave to the prophets of the
Old Testament. No Jew could keep all the laws all the time, so He kept all the
laws in their place, because He knew they would sin, but with sin, no one can
be saved.
But why did He give them the Law in the first place?
To prove to them this fact:
that THEY WOULD NEVER BE ABLE TO BE PERFECT, THEY
WOULD ALWAYS SIN AND BE CONTINUASLY FOUND GUILTY in the Eyes of God's Law. The
Law was only given so that they (and we) will see how sinful they were and that
through their best efforts they cannot always be obedient to the Law, them
being effected by sinful desires and demons. It was therefore a tool of God to
show them and the nations, that no one can be perfect as God wants them... and
that without moral perfection, no one can be saved, UNLESS, Someone pays
for all their sins so that they may freely be saved by grace!!
Indeed, the
Son of God, did not come to say, "Forget about
the laws, We were wrong, nevermind!",
but to even take their place and fulfill it completely, giving them the right to enter into a New Salvific
Covenant with Him!!! Realize this.
Now after
that, today, everyone that lives by the laws of the Old Testament, has to be
perfect in all of those commandments and always, as they had to before. Even if
one does one sin (which is impossible), he is guilty of the whole Law!!!! Jesus
is therefore telling them, “You are Jews. If you want to follow the Law, do
so but perfectly (Old Testament), but if you see that you can't achieve that,
follow Me and enter my New Testament for mankind, where you are saved through
My work for humanity and not by your works!” -If someone follows Him in the
New Covenant, then Jesus Christ, has already kept His Commandments for them and
has even died for all their sins so they can be saved, through His work, not
their efforts.
We hopefully
realize, how harmonious everything is in regards to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
The problem is, that muslims refer to this passage,
just to misuse it (!), because they have NEVER READ
WHAT ELSE JESUS AND HIS APOSTLES SAID; they don’t dare because they
know it might shake their own faith in Islam and this is why they do not
understand that when He says in this passage that "He came" to
fulfill the Law, He means he CAME FROM HEAVEN to earth to fulfill the demands
of the Law in the place of all people that try to be sinless, but still
can't!!!
Muslim, please, give yourself the chance for the real
Allah of the Bible to guide you, so you can then turn your devotion to Him. May
the God that loves you enough to want to give you the right to eternal salvation
save you, be allowed by you to do so in time, before you die.
PS. The above, were one part of the picture of God's plans. If a
sincere muslim wants to know the connected parts to
it to have a clear picture of it, they can read about them here, having
awareness of God and he will lead them to the full picture:
